Preview Night of King Lear at Reading Abbey Ruins

Progress Theatre returns to the beautiful surroundings of Reading Abbey Ruins for this year’s much-loved outdoor Shakespeare production, the powerful and tragic KING LEAR.

King Lear, ruler of the British Empire, intends to split his lands, his wealth, and his power between his three daughters. All but the title of King will be bestowed upon them, yet one decision to turn his back on those that love him the most will change everything.

His unpredictable behaviour and fall from grace lead to exile, conflict, madness and death for all around him. Staged within the imposing and grand walls of the magnificent Chapter House of the Ruins, this event is a perfect way to spend a summer evening. A fully licenced bar will be available via Reading-based Blue Collar Street Food, serving craft beers, Pimms, prosecco and soft drinks.

About Progress Theatre

Established in 1947 by a young group of forward-thinking actors and directors, Progress Theatre is Reading’s oldest producing theatre, performing a wide variety of classical plays and musicals in its 97-seat auditorium.

A registered charity, with Sir Kenneth Branagh as our Patron, Progress is run entirely by volunteers, encompassing a Writing Group and a very well-regarded Youth Theatre (ages 9 – 18). During the season, the theatre is also home to a monthly jazz night, and regular art exhibitions which run in conjunction with each production.
